Family Mediation is a cooperative, managed process where a neutral third person, the mediator, helps couples define the issues, facilitates discussion and helps them negotiate a solution. Our mediators are specially trained to help people resolve conflict. Family Law Mediators must be qualified under the Family Law Act, and have related expertise—for example, the may also be lawyers or mental health professionals.
You and your partner share the cost of the mediator, and you may have lawyers attend the mediation. The couple, with the mediator, may also decide they want an expert such a child specialist or a financial planners to attend the mediation to help resolve specific issues.
Our Family Law Mediators can work with you to decide how to best structure the mediation to help reach resolution.
In family arbitration, the couple hires an independent third-party to act as the “private judge” for their dispute.
The couple decides on the process, such as how evidence will be provided and decisions made with the arbitrator, who must be qualified under the Family Law Act. The process can be personalized to fit the situation and the parties. The process is agreed to by the couple in writing. The arbitration is usually conducted like a court hearing, for example, the arbitrator listens to oral evidence, reviews documents, evaluates evidence and then makes a binding written decision.
We have lawyers who are knowledgeable and experienced in guiding clients to reasonable and workable legal solutions, without resorting to court. Some of our family lawyers are also trained as collaborative lawyers, family law mediators, and family law arbitrators. Some offer Independent legal advice as well as unbundled legal services, and can help you negotiate, draft a separation agreement or legalize your divorce. Some of our family lawyers will go to court and attend hearings. It can be reassuring to speaking to a lawyer to get legal advice and help you understand your legal options.
• Couples who are willing to negotiate.
• Couples who are open to creative and individual solutions.
• Couples who want to minimize the uncertainty and hurt of uncoupling for themselves, each other, and their children.
Collaborative family law is a process in which everyone agrees to collaborate toward solutions that work for both parties and agree not to go to court. Each party has a collaborative lawyer, signs a participation agreement and sometimes works with other other experts. If an agreement is not reached, the lawyers are not allowed to represent the participants in court and they have to get new lawyers if they go to court.

Through the divorce process and beyond there are many practical interactions required in parenting. Having a neutral third-party assist in managing parental decisions provides a pathway for the stability that children require to thrive.
A Parenting Coordinator (PC) implements a child focused dispute resolution process for separated families particularly if they are in a constant state of conflict, unable to make effective and timely decisions
A Parenting Coordinator has an extensive background in working with families either through family law or family therapy, and has a high level of knowledge in both of these areas. They have undergone extensive training, have met standardized levels of practice and are qualified under the Family Law Act. Our Parenting Coordinators are trained in family law, child development, family dynamics, mediation and arbitration.
They assist parents in mediating parenting issues, and developing more effective communication protocols. If the parents are not able to reach an agreement through mediation, then the Parenting Coordinator can arbitrate a decision and provide a determination that is a binding decision.
Parenting coordination is most useful for parents who already have a parenting plan in a written agreement or court order to assist in the implementation of the existing order and arrangements.
Parents in conflict can retain a Parenting Coordinator on their own initiative or be referred to a parenting coordinator by the court.
